Concussion Program

The concussion program at Sports and Orthopaedic Specialists is one of the most comprehensive in the entire region. Concussions are common with an incidence of approximately 1.7-2.5 concussions per 10,000 practices or competitions performed by an individual. Our primary care sports medicine physicians and certified athletic trainers have advanced training in ImPACT testing, a specialized computer-based neuropsychological test used to help diagnose and manage concussions. Through ImPACT testing, clinical history, and physical examination findings, our providers guide participants through a concussion evaluation and makes assessments based on those results. If a concussion is suspected, recommendations are made regarding return to work or school, sports, or continued risk factors that may place a patient at risk for long-term cognitive deficits. Our providers coordinate with a specialized team of medical experts including neurologists and physical therapists when appropriate.
